What’s In A Name?

I was in a store over the weekend. That in and of itself is nothing remarkable. What is remarkable is my encounter with a very large woman of European descent with pink, short hair and a dress about 3 sizes too small.

To better help you understand the circumstances of my encounter, I should inform you of my purpose in traveling to a store, a chore in which I absolutely abhor for much the same reason as I shall explain, was to find something for lunch. When shopping, I tend to very much keep to myself; however, the old law enforcement officer part of my brain still requires me to be situationally aware of things around me and constantly looking for threats. I should also share with you that I was wearing a ball cap with a U.S. flag image on it and the words “USA” emblazoned upon it. I suspect by this point, many of you know where this post is leading.

My threat level alarm went off when I saw this blur of pink rushing toward me. I was concerned for two reasons. First, if she didn’t slow down she would knock me down with her landing on top of me, crushing me to death; and second, these folks are known to carry pepper spray and she was shouting at me and was red-faced. She ordered me to take my F’ing hat off. I politely declined and kept walking, not wishing to engage in a circular argument with a mass of hatred. As I hurriedly walked past her, she shouted “You’re a NAZI!” I just kept going, not wanting to create a scene. I took care of business and left without incident. During my drive home, I thought about having not been called such a derogatory term since my days as a street cop in Grand Island, Nebraska. In thinking about that repugnant term, I recalled my 9th grade history teacher referring to Nazis as “socialists.” (Thanks Mr. Barth for that info).

So when I got home, I looked up what Nazi stood for and there it was. “Nazi” is an abbreviation for “Nationalsozialistische” or in English, “National Socialist German Workers’ Party”. Amazing! So for the past decade or so, these so called “socialists” have been calling patriotic Americans, who are generally conservative individuals, Nazis when in fact, they more closely fit the definition of a Nazi. I would suggest it is past time we call attention to this discrepancy and set the record straight!
