Collateral Stress

I recently attended a recognition for the heroic efforts of those survivors who have been victims of crimes. There was time to remember those who have suffered from violence and those who have lost friends and family to acts of violence. I realized as I listened to the names of murder victims and those who had been preyed upon by others that I too carry names and dates with me of past incidents in which I investigated and responded.

The drive that makes the police profession a calling comes at a cost to those of you who share in the grief of loss of life and security of others. A little bit of you is eroded with each incident and each loss. Be sure to keep your faith strong and keep communicating with a confidant.

It’s OK to feel the loss and grief with others. Just be sure to keep your compass pointing forward. Know that what you do makes a difference!
